Butternut Wisdom

Picking at Butternut Farm is super easy! We work hard to make the day's best fruit easy to find, pick, and purchase. This way your time is spent enjoying company and the surroundings, not trying to figure out "How this place works?"

Keep reading for some helpful tips!

CONTAINERS

Containers are available at no additional charge.
Keep in mind we accept recycled farm containers or personal containers from home and offer a $.05/lb discounted price for any fruit picked into them. Please remember that farm employees should not be expected to handle your container of fruit at any time during the check out process. Scales, Credit Card machines, and counters will continue to be sanitized frequently.

*Often on busy weekend days our wagon supply is not enough, feel free to bring your own.

SIGNAGE

The farm can be very overwhelming, there are so many rows of similar looking trees, bushes, and berries... How does one know where to pick?
Simply follow the signs, they always lead to the tree-ripened, nutritionally complete, and uber delicious pick of the day.

Which way do we go from the farmstand? Just check the "Todays Picks" sign.

Follow the directionals on your way

Look for "Pick Here" signs, and the chalk boards always have helpful tips!

ODDS AND ENDS

Summer Heat: Please be prepared for the hot sun (especially during strawberries). We do have beverages for sale, however, we encourage you bring your own to keep hydrated. We open at 7 am for strawberries and early morning is a great time to beat the heat (better for berry storage as well). Don’t forget sunscreen, hats, and glasses to make your experience more comfortable.

Pets:
We ask that you DO NOT bring your dogs or other pets to the farm! We have some animals on the farm and it can be hard for them to get along with newcomers. Thank you for your cooperation.

Information hot line:
Due to weather and fruit availability, picking conditions can change quickly. The info line is updated daily, sometimes more frequently. Just give the farm a call before your trip to get the latest picking information.

SEASONAL TIPS

STRAWBERRIES

Come Early! Your strawberries will store better if picked in cooler temps and the best picks are always earlier in the day. If you have sore knees, bring a pad or other knee protection. Grab a Butternut Wisdom from the farmstand on your way out to the field. This will provide you with picking tips and other great information.

RASBPERRIES

Please call before coming, as there are times in raspberry season when we are not open regular hours. If you are looking for larger quantities come early, it is often slim pickinG.

BLUEBERRIES

Most days blueberries are easy to find. Picking is easy here, due to the well-pruned bushes. If you are having trouble finding berries look low and inside the bush because the easy to find berries are always the first to go. Please always call before coming to check picking conditions and hours. Check out our freezing and canning instructions to enjoy blueberries all year.

CHERRIES

They are fun to pick under the bird netting. Please be aware that the bird netting is an expensive and necessary tool to offer pick your own cherries - take care when you are picking. At the beginning of July there may be days when cherries are not available so please call first. Once we hit mid season though, ripe cherries should be available to the end of every day.

PEACHES

Call ahead. There are times (especially early season), when we are in between varieties. We will always offer the variety ready on both the phone message and the website. Be very gentle with your peaches, they bruise easily. Using the sides of your fingers, grasp the peach, twist and pull. If it does not come off easy it is not ripe.

APPLES

Apple season starts in shorts and T-shirt weather, and ends with coats, hats and gloves. Please check the weather before coming to dress appropriately. Apples are the easiest fruit to pick. Call ahead to get information on varieties available and head on over. Once here, there is always a person to direct you where to go, what apples are best, and any other picking information you may need.

HARD CIDER

Mostly grown and made right here at Butternut Farm, its hard to find a more locally made adult beverage. During your first purchase you will need to put a deposit down on a growler (the container) to bring your cider home in. This glass jar is 100% re-usable, just give it a quick rinse when your done and bring it back to the farm on your next visit for a refill in a sanitized growler or a refund of your deposit.
