cherries

at Butternut Farm

Pick your own cherries were added to the farm's portfolio of crops in 2005. We grow less than an acre, but every tree is under the netting so 100% of the fruit is kept safe from those hungry birds. This bird netting is a delicate but necessary tool to grow this super delicious fruit-please take care of it while you are out picking. Picking Cherries under the bird netting is a unique experience you do not want to miss. The season begins by July 4th and will typically last the entire month.

Our 2023 crop was frozen out by a deep freeze in February. We are going to have to go without this summer. Keep those fingers crossed for 2024.

Sweet cherries are rich with sugar and very low in acid. Such a sweet treat that are best used for eating.

Sour cherries definitely more tart than sweet cherries. These are the ones you want to use for everything else, including: drying, pies, juicing, and any other baking or preserving ideas.
